When Joe Cocker’s career was in a slump in 1974 he struggled to find new material. He decided to remake this song but slowed down the tempo drastically. Add his gravelly, beautiful voice and it’s my favorite song of his even though he didn’t write it. Contrary to this song’s reputation as a standard, romantic love song, it was originally intended as a tribute to Billy Preston’s mother who was the driving force in his life.
